Dairy farming is the largest sector of Ontario agriculture, and Dairy Farmers of Ontario is the marketing group that represents them. It’s made up of the same farmers who run the farms, and who produce the milk and dairy that you put on your table.
Ontario dairy farmers live every day with passion and purpose, generation after generation. Here are some of their stories.
“I appreciate our farm’s work-life balance.” Ryan’s day starts at 4:30 AM, but it’s important for him to finish the day with family dinner, even if it means going back out to the barns later at night.
“It’s about a strong family dynamic, a desire to learn, and an appreciation for what you have.” For Nathan and his family, dairy farming is about more than milking cows and clearing crops.
“Our community consumes a lot of our product, so we strive to produce a good quality for our neighbours.” If you ask the brothers, honest, hard work is what they’ve always believed in.
“It takes time, it takes patience, it takes hard work, it takes dedication.” Julie is proving to her daughters that strength and resolve mean you can do anything, like becoming a world champion breeder.
“As a family farm, we’re always together. We wouldn’t know what to do other than dairy farming.” Andre’s family believes in helping one another in the house, outside with their animals, and away from the farm.

DFO is proudly owned and operated by Ontario’s dairy farm families. It’s our mission to provide leadership and excellence in the production and marketing of Canadian milk.
The origin of what would eventually become Dairy Farmers of Ontario goes back over 50 years to the Milk Act of 1965. The Milk Act called for the creation of a body that would buy all the milk produced on Ontario farms and sell it to the processors. As a result, the Ontario Milk Marketing Board was created. Thirty years later, Dairy Farmers of Ontario was created following the merger of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board and the Ontario Cream Producers' Marketing Board.
