NOURISHING A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

It’s our nature to nourish lands and waters, the animals in our care and to advance on-the-farm solutions to meet the Canadian dairy industry target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

ACHIEVING OUR NET ZERO GOALS

Aligned with Dairy Farmers of Canada’s net zero by 2050 commitment, our efforts are concentrated in five focus areas

Carbon Footprint

Reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of dairy production.

Regenerative Agriculture

Improving soil health, land and water use and quality.

Biodiversity

Safeguarding on-farm ecosystems through habitat conservation and restoration.

Energy

Promoting energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy generation.

Plastics

Increasing recycling and improving plastic waste management.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH MILK

  • Today, dairy farmers represent 1 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The carbon footprint of one litre of Canadian milk is less than half the global average.
  • Canadian dairy farmers reduced the amount of water needed to produce milk by 6 per cent in five years by working with nature and recycling water.
  • From 1990 to 2020, Canadian dairy farmers reduced the carbon footprint of a litre of milk by 25 per cent, thanks to research as well as improving and finetuning their craft.
  • Between 2011 and 2016, Canadian dairy farmers reduced the amount of land needed to produce milk by 11 per cent.

As we work towards the Canadian dairy industry target of net zero, Ontario dairy farmers will be guided by the Best Management Practices Guide to Mitigate Emissions on dairy farms. This guide includes an overview of 30 best management practices that create opportunities to continue reducing emissions, increase carbon sequestration and improve overall environmental sustainability that will guide dairy farmers in identifying and implementing these practices on their own farms.
