Manager, Communications (External)

To succeed, you will have:
• Post-secondary education, preferably in communications, public relations or journalism;
• 5+ years' work experience in the communications field, preferably from a similar industry;
• 3+ years' people management experience;
• Strong business acument acting with sound judgement
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• Excellent media relations, crisis management, strategy and content development skills;
• Experience working closely with senior level executives and providing strategic counsel;
• Excellent critical thinking skills
• Strong organizational skills able to handle multiple projects at one time; project management experience;
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
• Bilingual in English & French an asset; and
• Dairy/Agriculture industry an asset

Key Responsibilities:

1. Work with the communications team and cross-functionally to build and execute end-to-end external facing communications and public relations initiatives aimed at increasing credibility and influence of the Ontario dairy sector. 
2. Lead organizational media relations, responding appropriately to urgent situations with accuracy, ensuring internal alignment; leverage strategic communications, marketing and government relations plan and media landscape to identify opportunities to influence government, media, and industry stakeholders. 
3. Provide advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholder groups, understanding perspectives and needs (includes advocacy efforts and Board/SMT support).
4. Build and maintain relationships within DFO and with external stakeholders (including journalists, government, and industry delegates) with maturity and professionalism.
5. Execute against strategic communications plan for the organization.
6. Provide strategic communications support to the organization by developing communications plans, key messages, Q&A documents, media plans, etc. on a wide range of topics and initiatives ensuring consistent and effective messaging to all audiences.
7. Ensure consistency in terms of key messaging, alignment with DFO's strategic communication priorities, brand and appropriate timing of delivery across all corporate communication assets used for external dissemination. 
8. Support and manage executive communications (presentations, remarks, correspondence, etc.) and oversee reporting to and from board and executive on a variety of subjects. 
9. Engage in crisis communications and co-ordinate implementation when required. 
10. Attend annual industry events on behalf of DFO; provide support to executives and Board Members at events.
